In a notable development, U.S. officials celebrated the arrival of the first cohort of South African Afrikaner refugees in the United States today. A total of 59 individuals, mainly families accompanied by children, landed at Dulles International Airport, marking a significant implementation of a new refugee program initiated by an executive order signed earlier this year.
President Donald Trump has reiterated his commitment to assist one of the globe’s most overlooked and persecuted minorities — the white Afrikaners of South Africa.
On February 7, 2025, Trump enacted an executive order suspending all American assistance to South Africa, citing “government-sponsored race-based discrimination,” which includes the controversial confiscation of property based on race.
It’s worth noting that Julius Malema, the leader of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has previously made incendiary remarks at rallies, advocating violence against white South Africans, stating, “We must be able to explain to our people what black consciousness is and why it cannot coexist with the idea that white people are inherently superior; one of the two must die.”
Trump’s executive order stipulates that the U.S. will facilitate the resettlement of Afrikaner refugees fleeing such persecution.
The directive calls on the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Homeland Security to prioritize humanitarian assistance, including resettlement through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, for those Afrikaners suffering from unjust racial discrimination in South Africa.
Subsequent to the executive order, the U.S. Embassy in South Africa received expressions of interest from over 67,000 individuals seeking refugee status under this newly established program.
U.S. officials have commenced interviews with applicants, with reports indicating that over 30 approvals had been granted by late April 2025, according to Reuters.
On Monday, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Troy Edgar welcomed the refugees, emphasizing America’s enduring role as a sanctuary for those escaping oppression.
Unlike the challenges associated with illegal immigration from the southern border — where many individuals exhibit a blatant disregard for American laws and culture while seeking entitlements — these refugees represent a contrasting narrative.
