A Resilient Dog Overcomes Cancer After Being Abandoned During Hurricane Milton

During Hurricane Milton, a white bull terrier named Trooper was left tied to a fence near Tampa, Florida, surrounded by rising floodwaters. Fortunately, he was rescued by the Florida Highway Patrol and adopted by Frank and Karla Spina, who welcomed him into their family.

Just two weeks after being adopted, Trooper was diagnosed with cancer after lumps were found on his left side. The Spinas were devastated but determined to help their new furry family member.

After undergoing surgery to remove the cancer, doctors discovered that Trooper had ingested a freezer bag weighing over two pounds, causing further complications. The resilient dog underwent a life-saving surgery to remove the foreign objects from his stomach.

Despite the challenges, Trooper’s spirit remained strong, and he quickly recovered from both cancer and the ingestion of the freezer bag. His previous owner, Giovanny Garcia, was charged with aggravated animal cruelty for abandoning him during the hurricane.

Named in honor of the trooper who rescued him, Trooper found a loving home with the Spina family, who have been caring for bull terriers for over three decades. His story of survival and resilience captured the hearts of many, leading to a surge of interest from potential adopters.

Now cancer-free, Trooper has become best friends with the Spinas’ other dog, Dallas. The Leon County Humane Society played a crucial role in Trooper’s journey to recovery, ensuring that he found a safe and loving home with a family that cherishes him as their own.

For the Spinas, Trooper and Dallas are not just pets but beloved members of their family. Their unwavering love and dedication have helped Trooper overcome the odds and thrive in his new forever home.
