Published
A Florida man found himself in a bizarre and dangerous situation when he was arrested for driving under the influence while his vehicle was engulfed in flames. The man, identified as Patrick Rinaldi, claimed to have consumed only one beer before getting behind the wheel.
According to the arrest affidavit from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responding to a brush fire caused by a vehicle noticed Rinaldi driving along U.S.-192 with heavy smoke emanating from his car. Witnesses reported that Rinaldi briefly stopped before driving off again, this time with the entire vehicle engulfed in flames.
Witnesses also revealed that Rinaldi’s wife was in the car with him during this harrowing incident, further adding to the gravity of the situation. The sheriff’s post on Facebook detailed the dramatic events that unfolded.
As the car became increasingly engulfed in flames, Rinaldi struggled to assist his wife in escaping the inferno. Deputies noted a strong smell of alcohol coming from the vehicle and observed Rinaldi’s impaired physical and verbal faculties.
Rinaldi’s behavior, including slurred speech, unsteady movements, and bloodshot eyes, indicated his intoxication. Despite claiming to have consumed only one beer, deputies discovered a bottle of liquor in the car and Rinaldi’s refusal to undergo a DUI test.
Rinaldi was charged with DUI and Refusal to Submit, leading to his transport to Ivey’s Iron Bar Lodge for processing. The sheriff’s statement highlighted the absurdity of Rinaldi’s actions, emphasizing the unfortunate timing of his arrest.
It’s a bizarre and ironic twist of fate for Rinaldi to be apprehended for DUI while his car was literally on fire. This unusual incident serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of driving under the influence, especially in such extreme circumstances.
