Florida has proposed a new immigration detention center for illegal migrants, nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” situated on a 39-square-mile plot of land surrounded by alligators and pythons.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier offered this “virtually abandoned airport facility” to the Trump administration, suggesting it could house up to 1,000 criminal aliens and be operational in just 30 to 60 days.
Uthmeier stated that Florida has been at the forefront of immigration enforcement and has been supporting ICE’s efforts in detaining and deporting criminal aliens.
He referred to the proposed site as “Alligator Alcatraz,” highlighting its strategic location surrounded by swampland and wildlife.
The proposed facility offers an efficient and cost-effective solution for detention, with the natural perimeter of the area being guarded by alligators and pythons.
ICE’s current detention centers are overcrowded, holding approximately 53,000 illegal migrants, leading to a significant strain on the agency’s budget.
If the proposed “Big Beautiful Bill” passes, ICE could receive additional funding to expand its capacity for detaining illegal migrants.
However, the increased arrest quotas and focus on detaining migrants are reportedly affecting agency morale, shifting attention away from criminal migrants.
