Mayor Brandon Johnson Shifts Stance on Curfews Ahead of New Year’s Eve Celebration

Mayor Brandon Johnson has been a vocal critic of curfews for teenagers, dismissing them as ineffective and outdated. However, as Chicago prepares for a nationally televised New Year’s Eve celebration along the Chicago River, Johnson has taken a different approach, emphasizing the strict enforcement of the city’s 10 p.m. curfew for teenagers in the downtown area.

Despite his previous opposition to curfews, citing concerns about their effectiveness in preventing violence, Johnson’s sudden pivot highlights the significance of maintaining order during high-profile events like the New Year’s Eve festivities.

The New Year’s Eve celebration, to be hosted by Chance the Rapper and broadcast by ABC, has prompted the city to prioritize public safety measures, including the enforcement of the longstanding curfew that has been in place since 1992.

Johnson’s change in stance comes after a series of violent incidents involving teenagers in downtown Chicago, including shootings and robberies targeting tourists and residents alike. While the mayor has historically resisted calls for stricter curfew regulations, the upcoming event has underscored the need for proactive measures to ensure a safe environment for all attendees.

Despite previous objections to expanding curfews, Johnson’s decision to enforce the 10 p.m. curfew reflects a shift in his approach to addressing youth-related violence in the city. While he has maintained that curfews do not address the root causes of crime, the mayor’s actions ahead of the New Year’s Eve celebration demonstrate a willingness to prioritize public safety during high-profile events.
