Donald Trump has achieved a significant objective: his frequent adversary, former FBI Director James Comey, has been indicted by federal authorities.
Comey now faces serious allegations, charged with two counts: making false statements to Congress and obstructing justice.
Trump has long sought to bring criminal charges against Comey, with urgency as the time limit for prosecution was rapidly approaching. A decision had to be finalized by Tuesday to avoid surpassing the statute of limitations.
Just the previous weekend, Trump vocally urged Attorney General Pam Bondi on Truth Social to initiate indictments against Comey, along with Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James. In an interesting twist, that post has since been deleted, yet Bondi clearly received the hint.

Bondi remarked, “No one is above the law. Today’s indictment showcases the Department of Justice’s determination to hold accountable those who exploit their positions of authority by misleading the American people. We will seek the truth in this matter.”
The charges of alleged deception and obstruction pertain to Comey’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee concerning Trump’s purported connections to Russia during the 2016 electoral campaign.
Federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of Virginia had previously informed the U.S. Attorney there that the evidence was insufficient to initiate charges against Comey, and the U.S. Attorney concurred. Subsequently, Trump exerted pressure, leading to the resignation of the U.S. Attorney he had appointed.

Trump’s former defense attorney, Lindsey Halligan, now occupies that role. Earlier today, during an Oval Office event, the President was questioned about the potential indictment of Comey and took the opportunity to express his views freely.
This marks a notable first, as Comey is the first FBI director to face federal criminal charges.
