Super Bowl champion Richard Sherman is facing DUI charges once again, more than a year after his arrest in Washington state. The former Seattle Seahawk has been charged with refusing to take a breath test, which is considered a gross misdemeanor in the state and could result in a harsher penalty, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorneyâs Office.
Sherman was pulled over by a Washington State trooper on I-405 in the early hours of February 24, 2024, for speeding and erratic driving behavior. Despite initially telling troopers that he had consumed two margaritas, Sherman refused to take a breathalyzer test. However, he agreed to perform some voluntary tests, which led police to believe he was under the influence and subsequently took him into custody.
Police obtained a signed warrant to draw Shermanâs blood approximately two hours after the traffic stop, revealing a blood-alcohol level of about 0.11, above the legal limit of 0.08. The charges were officially filed the day after the prosecutorâs office received the blood test results from the crime lab.
This is not the first time Sherman has faced legal trouble related to drunk driving. In July 2021, he was arrested for drunk driving and domestic disturbance charges after crashing his car into a construction zone and attempting to break into his in-lawsâ home outside of Seattle. The case was resolved in March 2022 when Sherman pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges.
Sherman, who played for the Seahawks from 2011 to 2017 and later had stints with the San Francisco 49ers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before retiring in 2021, has since been working as a pre and postgame analyst for Prime Videoâs âThursday Night Footballâ and as a panelist on FS1âs âUndisputed.â
Despite his successful football career, Shermanâs off-field behavior has raised concerns, and his recent DUI charges highlight the ongoing legal challenges he faces. It remains to be seen how this latest development will impact his reputation and future endeavors in the sports industry.
