Michele Tafoya Launches Senate Campaign with Republican Backing

Michele Tafoya, the former sideline reporter for “Sunday Night Football” and now a conservative commentator, officially kicked off her campaign for the Minnesota Senate on Wednesday. Her announcement was met with immediate endorsement from the Republican campaign arm and its prominent figure, Senator Tim Scott.

This endorsement from the South Carolina senator, which was first disclosed to POLITICO, significantly enhances Tafoya’s position in the race for the open Senate seat. Currently, she faces several other contenders in the Republican primary, including former Minnesota Republican Party Chair David Hann.

“The Walz-Flanagan administration has let Minnesotans down, from allowing billions in fraud to undermining law enforcement,” Scott stated. “However, change is on the horizon, and Michele Tafoya is poised to lead that change. She embodies the practical leadership that Minnesotans yearn for, and her agenda focused on safety, opportunity, and prosperity is just what our Senate majority needs.”

Since departing from the sports media landscape, Tafoya has ventured into podcasting and has made increasing appearances on conservative platforms.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has also released a memo indicating that Minnesota—where Vice President Kamala Harris won by a narrow margin of four points in 2024—is now “firmly in play for Republicans.”

“Republicans have a legitimate and timely opportunity here. With Michele Tafoya as a high-profile and trusted figure, and with voters clamoring for accountability, transparency, and oversight, the GOP is strategically positioned to shape the narrative early and put Democrats on the defensive,” the memo articulates.

Interestingly, Tafoya has evolved from being a vocal critic of Donald Trump to a more supportive stance in recent times, and she has been contemplating a Senate bid for several months, spurred by encouragement from national Republican leaders.

Her entry into the race coincides with heightened scrutiny of ICE’s operations in Minnesota, especially following the tragic killing of Renee Nicole Good, which has drawn national attention to the state.
