The Toronto Maple Leafs face a crucial offseason as they navigate the uncertain futures of Mitch Marner and former captain John Tavares. Both players are set to become free agents on July 1, leaving the team with some tough decisions to make. As the organization enters a new era, here are four potential paths the Maple Leafs could take regarding their Core 4.

1. Re-sign both Marner and Tavares: This option presents the biggest challenge for the Leafs. With Marner and Tavares combining for over $21 million against the salary cap last season, re-signing both players would require significant financial commitment. While negotiations could see Tavares taking a pay cut, Marner is likely to command a hefty salary, potentially exceeding Auston Matthews’ $13.25 million cap hit. This scenario would eat up a large portion of the team’s projected $25.7 million in cap space, making it a difficult but not impossible choice.

2. Let both Marner and Tavares walk: Allowing both Marner and Tavares to depart would open up key spots in the lineup. The Leafs would need to find a top-line winger for Matthews and address the second-line center position. With ample cap space available, the team could explore the free-agent market for solutions. However, the lack of depth in this year’s free-agent pool could make this option challenging, requiring General Manager Brad Treliving to get creative in rebuilding the roster.

3. Keep Marner, let Tavares walk: Another possibility is for the Maple Leafs to prioritize re-signing Marner while parting ways with Tavares. This approach could make sense if the team believes replacing Tavares is more feasible than finding a replacement for Marner. Shedding Tavares’ $11 million cap hit would provide flexibility to address other roster needs, such as re-signing key players and strengthening the depth of the lineup.

4. Keep Tavares, let Marner walk: At present, this option appears to be the most likely outcome. Tavares has expressed a desire to remain with the team, while early indications suggest that Marner is open to exploring free agency. By retaining Tavares and allowing Marner to depart, the Leafs could potentially save on salary expenses. Tavares’ cap hit could be adjusted, creating room to address other areas of the roster and maintain stability in the core group.

In an ideal scenario, the Maple Leafs would retain both Marner and Tavares while addressing all roster needs. However, the constraints of the salary cap era necessitate tough decisions this offseason. As the team navigates this critical period, the front office will need to carefully assess each option and prioritize the long-term success of the organization.
