The Frankenthaler Climate Initiative (FCI) is now accepting applications for its sixth grant cycle, demonstrating a strong commitment to promoting sustainability within the visual arts sector. Launched in 2021, this initiative has emerged as the largest private national grant program of its kind, providing support to visual arts organizations across the United States. Through the assessment, planning, and implementation of energy efficiency projects, FCI aims to help institutions reduce their environmental impact through clean energy generation and efficiency measures. To date, the program has awarded over $17.5 million to 249 organizations in 40 states.

Elizabeth Smith, Executive Director of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, emphasizes the significant role that the arts sector plays in driving innovative sustainability models. She notes that arts organizations are actively translating their values into tangible actions, leading the way in developing projects that not only enhance energy performance but also promote stewardship and resourcefulness. Each grant cycle contributes to shaping a more resilient and low-carbon cultural landscape.

Eligible organizations can apply for various grant types under the FCI program, including Catalyst Grants, Scoping Grants, Technical Assistance Grants, and Implementation Grants. These grants cater to organizations of different sizes and scopes, providing funding for a range of energy efficiency projects. Museums, archives, art institutions, artist residency programs, and community art centers are just a few examples of eligible applicants. Previous grantees can also apply for new projects or grant types, as long as they have not received three prior FCI awards.

Draft applications for Implementation Grants must be submitted by February 27, 2026, with final applications due by March 27, 2026, at 5pm (ET). For detailed eligibility criteria and application guidelines, interested parties can visit the official website of the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative at frankenthalerclimateinitiative.org.

With its ongoing commitment to fostering sustainability and resilience within the visual arts community, the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative continues to make a significant impact on the cultural landscape. Visual arts organizations are encouraged to seize this opportunity to embrace energy efficiency and contribute to a more sustainable future.
