The suspect accused of brutally killing his ex-girlfriend in Queens has been formally charged with murder, prosecutors announced, as the victim’s mother expressed her anger and grief over the tragic loss of her daughter. De’Ovryion Elijha Ray, 23, who has been in custody in South Carolina since October, was indicted on murder charges for the heinous crime he allegedly committed against 21-year-old Dashanna Donovan.
According to authorities, Ray is accused of ambushing Donovan inside her East Elmhurst residence, shooting her in the head as she tried to escape. The victim’s mother, Helena Hypolite, described Ray as an “animal” who should spend the rest of his life behind bars. She shared her mixed emotions upon learning about the indictment, feeling a sense of relief that justice may be served but also knowing that she will have to relive the painful memories of her daughter’s death.
Hypolite believes that Ray’s actions were driven by a need for control and obsession, especially after Donovan ended their relationship. Prosecutors now have 30 days to bring Ray back to New York City to face the murder charges along with criminal possession of a weapon charges.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny provided details of the chilling attack, stating that surveillance footage captured the moment Donovan realized the gunman approaching her in a courtyard behind her building. She attempted to flee but was ultimately caught by Ray, who shot her multiple times in the head, resulting in her tragic death.
Evidence from the crime scene, including bullet holes in the wall, corroborates the brutal nature of the attack. Donovan had recently moved to New York to escape an abusive relationship with her ex-boyfriend, whom her mother believes had intentions of killing her based on previous violent incidents.
Hypolite expressed her desire for Ray to be held accountable for his actions, ensuring that he does not pose a threat to anyone else. She emphasized the importance of seeking justice for her daughter’s senseless death and preventing further harm from being inflicted by the perpetrator.
If Ray is convicted of the murder charges, he could face up to 25 years to life in prison. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz reaffirmed her office’s commitment to pursuing justice for Donovan and her family, condemning the defendant’s attempt to evade accountability by fleeing the state after committing the heinous crime. The community’s thoughts and support are with the victim’s loved ones as they navigate the painful process of seeking justice and closure.
