A family was searching for a house to meet an out-of-town guest when their vehicle was approached by a 16-year-old on probation for armed robbery. The teenager assumed a shooting stance and fired, injuring their 12-year-old son, prosecutors report. The boy suffered a fractured skull, bullet fragments lodged in his brain, and temporary paralysis.

The incident occurred around 6:45 p.m. on February 3 in the 900 block of North Leamington, according to prosecutors. The 12-year-old was seated in the backseat beside his 1-year-old sibling. While the father was looking for the house, he noticed Nasir Pitts approaching the driver’s side and taking a shooting stance, as detailed in a detention filing.

The father shouted for his family to duck as Pitts allegedly fired five shots, one hitting the boy in the head. Prosecutors indicated that the father drove away quickly while the mother contacted 911. Police and paramedics intercepted the family and took the boy to a hospital, where doctors discovered his severe injuries. The boy continues to receive medical treatment, as stated in the detention filing.

Investigators found bullet holes in the car’s rear driver-side door and trunk, and the rear window was shattered. A witness’s surveillance footage showed Pitts and an accomplice fleeing to a nearby house after the shooting. Detectives also obtained additional video evidence that assisted in the investigation. Based on their findings, detectives included Pitts’s photo in a lineup, and the father identified him as the shooter.

This shooting occurred less than a year after Pitts received probation for a July 2024 armed robbery. Prosecutors state he wore a ski mask during the robbery, approached a woman, and took her phone at gunpoint. Police tracked the phone the next day, finding Pitts still wearing a ski mask and possessing the stolen phone.
