Fulton County Fights Back: Legal Action Over Seized 2020 Election Ballots
Fulton County is gearing up for a legal showdown as it seeks the return of its 2020 election ballots, which were recently confiscated during an FBI raid, according to county commission Chair Robb Pitts who spoke to reporters on Wednesday.
This move marks the county’s latest effort to safeguard its electoral integrity amid growing scrutiny and criticism from former President Donald Trump and his Republican supporters.
“Just last week, I pledged to the voters of Fulton County—and, frankly, to the world—that we will exhaust every available resource to defend their right to vote. We will stand firm against those who wish to undermine our elections,” Pitts asserted at a press conference. “The very fabric of our Constitution hangs in the balance in this battle.”
The legal motion filed by Fulton County is currently under seal, meaning the specifics remain confidential for now. Pitts emphasized that the county is also pushing to have the affidavit that justified the FBI’s search of its election office made public.
It’s worth noting that Trump has consistently propagated the unfounded narrative that the 2020 election was tainted, branding Fulton County—a central hub in Georgia, particularly due to Atlanta—as a focal point for his baseless claims of widespread voter fraud.
Interestingly, Trump himself was previously charged in Fulton County for actions attempting to overturn the 2020 election results, although that case was dismissed last November.
Since reclaiming the presidency, Trump has been relentless in revisiting the 2020 election saga, expressing a desire to exert a more significant influence over upcoming elections—a development that has raised alarms among election officials and Democratic leaders nationwide. In a recent appearance on a podcast hosted by former Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino, he suggested that Republicans should aim to nationalize elections.
“Soon, people will face prosecution for their actions,” he warned attendees at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, earlier this year.
The FBI has opted not to comment on the county’s motion, and the Justice Department has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the situation.
“Let there be no doubt, in my view, Fulton County is a microcosm of the challenges faced by states, counties, and cities across the nation, particularly in light of the 2020 elections,” Pitts declared. “The president and his allies simply refuse to accept the reality of their defeat.”
