After 180 years, a miraculous event has taken place in the Galápagos Islands. A tortoise species that was once thought to be extinct has returned to its native home on Floreana Island. The Floreana giant tortoise, a subspecies of the Galápagos giant tortoise, disappeared from the island due to human activities and invasive species. However, in 2000, scientists discovered a population of tortoises on Isabela Island that bore a striking resemblance to the Floreana giant tortoise. Genetic testing confirmed that these were hybrid tortoises with Floreana ancestry.

Last week, a total of 158 specially bred Floreana hybrid tortoises were released onto Floreana Island as part of a special captive breeding program. This monumental event marks the first time in nearly two centuries that tortoises with Floreana lineage have set foot on the island. The release was a culmination of a 26-year effort led by James Gibbs, vice president of science and conservation for the Galápagos Conservancy.

The breeding program involved carefully pairing adult tortoises from Isabela Island based on genetic testing to maximize the offspring’s Floreana ancestry. While the released tortoises are not exact genetic replicas of their ancestors, they do carry a significant amount of the original Floreana lineage. This reintroduction of the tortoises is not only a win for the animals themselves but also for the island ecosystem.

The Galápagos tortoise is considered a keystone species, playing a crucial role in seed dispersal and forest regeneration. By bringing back these giant tortoises to Floreana Island, scientists hope to restore the island’s ecological balance and push it towards its original state. Similar successes have been seen in other conservation efforts, where the reintroduction of species has led to the recovery of native plants and habitats.

Rick Hudson, president emeritus of the Turtle Survival Alliance, emphasizes the positive impact of returning ecosystem engineers like giant tortoises to their natural habitats. The reestablishment of these species can lead to the restoration of native habitats and the resurgence of original ecological processes.

James Gibbs expresses optimism about the future of Floreana Island, stating that the return of the tortoises signifies the restart of the island’s ecosystems and evolutionary lineage. This event serves as a powerful reminder that conservation efforts can lead to the restoration of lost species and the rejuvenation of entire ecosystems. The biological processes that once shaped Floreana Island are now coming back to life, offering hope for a brighter future for this unique and biodiverse island.
