Travis Gienger Wins Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off for the Second Consecutive Year
Travis Gienger has once again claimed victory at the 51st Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off, marking his fourth win overall. This year, his prize-winning pumpkin named Rudy tipped the scales at an impressive 2,471 pounds. To put that weight into perspective, Rudy is twice as heavy as a grizzly bear, half the weight of a Rhinoceros, two-thirds the weight of a car, and could flavor a whopping 74,794 pumpkin spice lattes.
Gienger, a horticulture teacher from Minnesota, will receive nine dollars per pound in prize money, along with a pumpkin grower champion ring, champions jacket, and a two-night stay at the luxurious Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay, California where the competition is held annually. His record-breaking entry in 2023 weighed 2,749 pounds and earned him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. Gienger also holds the world record for the largest jack-o’-lantern by circumference, which he achieved in October 2022 with a pumpkin carved to resemble an eagle, boasting a circumference of 242 inches.
Reflecting on his unexpected win, Gienger remarked, “I didn’t think I’d have anything come June. If you had talked to me in June I would have been like, no, our weather is way too wet, way too cold.”
The Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off is part of the annual Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival, a popular event that draws thousands of visitors to the coastal city of Half Moon Bay, California each year. The region is renowned for its large pumpkin patches and pumpkin-themed activities.
The tradition of growing colossal pumpkins dates back to the 1970s, with the first 1,000-pound pumpkin making its debut in 1996. Growers utilize special seeds that are swapped out annually to produce these enormous gourds. Pumpkins have a growing season that can span over 100 days, allowing them ample time to reach extraordinary sizes. Their thick and woody rinds provide protection against pests and environmental factors, contributing to their impressive growth.
Most record-breaking pumpkins, including Gienger’s Rudy, are Dill’s Atlantic Giants, a variety specifically bred for their size. These pumpkins may possess innate advantages such as larger vascular tissue or enhanced nutrient absorption capabilities, enabling them to achieve remarkable sizes.
While these giant pumpkins often end up as attractions in pumpkin festivals or as jack-o’-lanterns, they also offer nutritional benefits when consumed. Pumpkins are rich in nutrients that support the immune system and promote heart health. Their versatility makes them a versatile ingredient that can be incorporated into a variety of dishes.
Overall, Travis Gienger’s consecutive wins at the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off showcase his dedication to growing these colossal gourds and his exceptional skill in the world of competitive pumpkin cultivation.
