Outside the spotlight, Marie-Christine Statz has been working closely with Benjamin Millepied in recent seasons, including the acclaimed Grace (Jeff Buckley Dances) and The Nutcracker last year.

For this spring’s collection, the celebrated choreographer and designer reunited, substituting the grand stage for the intimate atmosphere of Gauchère’s chic showroom near the Tuileries. In a short, lyrical performance, several dancers flowed through the space showcasing a selection of 15 pieces from a spring line characterized by soft colors—whites, browns, blacks, and beiges—punctuated by vibrant shades of slate blue and shiny fabrics, highlighted in delicate bralette tops featuring intricate asymmetrical lacing.

“The theme of this collection centers around transformation and the concept of opposing forces. Beyond movement in the garments, there’s a focus on floatation, transitions, and presenting the clothing in novel ways,” the designer shared. Millepied added that despite the limitations of the venue, he was “excited to present the garments within an emotional framework, from various perspectives. It was a rewarding exploration of the clothing experience.”

Statz excels in her mastery of contemporary, effortless tailoring. Backstage, editors had the opportunity to closely examine the entire collection, featuring layered tops, striking pieces in Japanese denim, and faux leather—a brand first—that appeared sophisticated yet, as demonstrated by the dancers, were capable of accommodating a wider range of movement than what might typically occur outside a rehearsal setting. Some innovative items, especially a selection of multi-snap styles created from sold-viscose crepe panels, will attract those who enjoy playing with their wardrobe. Additionally, there is no shortage of offerings for admirers of Gauchère’s “subtle sophistication,” as Millepied aptly described. However, it would have been wonderful to see more of that on the runway.
