Emotions ran high in All Saints Chapel during Thursday and Friday’s episodes of “General Hospital.” Family, friends, and colleagues gathered to celebrate the life of Dr. Monica Quartermaine, who recently passed away peacefully in her sleep. The heartfelt scenes were driven by genuine emotion, as Leslie Charleson, who portrayed Monica since 1977, had also died in January at the age of 79. These memorable moments served as a poignant farewell to both the beloved character and the actress.
“Bringing her to life was incredibly difficult after her passing in real life,” shared Jane Elliot, the actress behind Tracy Quartermaine, Monica’s sister-in-law. “I was confronted with the sorrow of mourning her death not just once but twice.”
Prepare for an emotional ride – you’ll need those tissues. The memorial service unfolds quietly, with Jason (Steve Burton), who was raised by Monica, waiting in the chapel to greet mourners. The grief etched on his face as he gazes at Monica’s photo, realizing how their time together at the mansion over the past year brought them closer, makes the scene particularly moving.
At the Quartermaine mansion, as depicted in exclusive footage, Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) comforts Chase (Josh Swickard), explaining that everyone has their own way of mourning, recognizing that her grandmother might not want to express her grief publicly. Ned (Wally Kurth) recalls his complicated relationship with Monica and confides in Olivia (Lisa LoCicero) that he still senses her presence throughout the house.
As mourners arrive at the chapel, memories of Monica’s impact flood their minds. Tracy ponders over a photo of Monica, overwhelmed with emotion, and learns of Jason’s special tribute to the woman he regarded as his mother.
As the service commences, the congregation watches closely to see if Tracy will manage to confront her feelings and speak at the service. “She’s initially dead-set against it, but many people want her to share her thoughts. The big question is whether anyone can change her mind,” Elliot remarks.
“Leslie left a void in my life that I can’t overlook,” Elliot shares. “She was both a dear friend and acting partner. We met in 1965 when I was 18 and she was dating a boy in a show I was in. Our friendship blossomed over the years until our paths crossed again on ‘GH’ in 1978, where I unexpectedly found myself playing her sister-in-law.”
Elliot and Charleson forged a deep bond off-screen despite their characters’ antagonistic relationship. They celebrated anniversaries together and supported each other through life’s milestones. “It’s particularly painful to mourn her twice, once for Leslie and once for Monica. They eventually became intertwined for me,” she explains.

The impact of Monica’s death weighs heavily on Tracy. Upon her entry into the show, Monica was married to Tracy’s brother, Alan, whom Tracy long looked down upon. However, as time passed and tragedy struck Tracy’s life, her perspective shifted, and she began to view Monica as her equal.
“At one point, Tracy viewed Monica as socially inferior, but as the years progressed, their relationship matured. Monica was a successful surgeon and a key figure at the hospital, which eventually fostered a mutual respect between the two,” Elliot notes reflectively.
Now, faced with the absence of Monica, Tracy must grapple with her loss. “This is a monumental loss for her. With all her contemporaries gone, Monica represented her last connection to the past. Losing her felt like losing an arm, leaving Tracy truly alone,” Elliott explains.
