The ruling party in Georgia, led by a billionaire with ties to Russia, has faced criticism for its alleged pro-Russian stance and controversial legislation ahead of the recent elections. This has prompted concerns from the EU and the US about Georgia’s shift away from a pro-Western path towards Russia’s influence.

In response, Georgian Dream, the ruling party, has defended its actions as necessary to protect the country’s sovereignty and prevent external interference. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has accused the opposition of inciting violence to destabilize the government.

Protests Erupt in Georgia

Recent protests in Tbilisi have seen clashes between police and demonstrators, with reports of injuries on both sides. The US has condemned the alleged excessive use of force by the police, while Georgia’s public ombudsman has raised concerns about police violence against protesters.

The unrest has led to arrests and injuries, sparking further protests and strikes in the country. Diplomats and civil servants have expressed their opposition to the government’s decisions, leading to resignations among Georgian ambassadors.

Meanwhile, Russia has defended the crackdown on protesters, stating that it is necessary to maintain stability. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov drew parallels with Ukraine’s Maidan protests, suggesting a similar scenario could unfold in Georgia.

The situation remains tense as protests continue in Georgia, with concerns about the country’s political direction and the impact of external influences.
