French artist Claire Tabouret has been chosen as the winner of a national competition to create new stained glass windows for Notre-Dame in Paris. The French government has unveiled modern designs to replace six windows at the iconic cathedral, marking a significant moment in its restoration following the devastating fire in 2019.

Tabouret, known for her expressive paintings that delve into themes of identity and female empowerment, emerged victorious from a pool of over 100 submissions. Her proposal, which features vibrant hues of blue, pink, and yellow depicting diverse individuals praying together for Pentecost, stood out for its message of unity and hope in a time of division and conflict.

The new stained glass windows will replace the existing ones on the south side of Notre-Dame, originally created by 19th-century architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. While some have questioned the decision to replace the historic windows, citing international heritage guidelines that prioritize the preservation of original work, Tabouret views the debate as an opportunity for dialogue and reflection.

Collaborating with the historic glassmaker Simon-Marq in Reims, Tabouret is excited to bring her designs to life and contribute to the rich history of Notre-Dame. The studio, founded in 1650, has a long history of restoring stained glass windows and working with renowned artists like Marc Chagall and Joan MirĂł.

As Notre-Dame reopens its doors to the public, Tabouret’s new stained glass windows will be a testament to the cathedral’s resilience and the power of art to inspire and unite people from all walks of life. Despite the controversy surrounding the decision to replace the windows, Tabouret remains committed to creating a lasting legacy that reflects the spirit of Notre-Dame and its enduring significance in the cultural landscape of France.
