Grime artist Ghetts, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, has been sentenced to jail after admitting to causing the death of 20-year-old Yubin Tamang in a high-speed crash in northeast London. The incident occurred in Ilford last October when Clarke-Samuel was driving his BMW M5 at nearly 74mph in a 30mph zone and struck Mr. Tamang as he crossed Redbridge Lane at 11:33 pm.

Mr. Tamang, who had moved to the UK from Nepal to study and build a better future, tragically passed away in the hospital two days later from his injuries. The severity of the crash and the events that followed have sent shockwaves through both the music industry and the wider public.

A Night of Reckless Decisions

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Clarke-Samuel had been socializing in central London before driving recklessly through Camden, Islington, and Hackney. CCTV footage showed him driving on the wrong side of the road and narrowly missing a cyclist. Moments before the fatal collision, he was driving at excessive speed, hitting Mr. Tamang at approximately 67mph, more than double the legal speed limit.

After the collision, instead of stopping to help Mr. Tamang, Clarke-Samuel continued driving for around eight miles to his home. Upon reaching his residence, he consumed six or seven shots of Ciroc vodka and a cannabis-infused cookie. The BMW he was driving was found parked near his home with severe damage, including a smashed windscreen, heavy bonnet markings, front bumper destruction, and a missing wing mirror cover.

The judge described the events leading up to and following the crash as “simply shocking.” Clarke-Samuel claimed he had been driving dangerously because he believed someone was following him, but CCTV evidence disproved this claim.

Victim’s Family: “Our Hearts Are Broken Beyond Repair”

After the sentencing, emotional statements from Mr. Tamang’s parents were read in court. The spokesperson for the family expressed their deep grief, stating that their hearts were broken beyond repair. They described their son as a precious soul who had come to the UK to study and create a better life for himself and his family. They emphasized that Clarke-Samuel had stolen their son’s future and theirs along with it.

Mr. Tamang’s mother, Sharmila Tamang, broke down in court while describing the extreme pain and unimaginable sense of loss at losing her only child. While acknowledging Clarke-Samuel’s guilty plea and imprisonment, the family made it clear that forgiveness was not possible.

Expression of Remorse in Court

Clarke-Samuel has been in custody since his preliminary appearance at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on 27 October. During the sentencing, he showed little outward emotion in the dock, dressed in black with his eyes closed.

Through his defense counsel, Benjamin Aina KC, Clarke-Samuel submitted a letter expressing extreme regret, shame, and remorse. In the letter, he expressed his enormous feeling of guilt and shame for the suffering he had caused. He apologized to Mr. Tamang’s family, the wider community, his own family, and the court, stating that he offered no excuses and had let his family and community down.

The judge acknowledged Clarke-Samuel’s genuine remorse, along with his community contributions and charitable work. He also noted that Clarke-Samuel’s music had provided him with a following and significant financial reward. Despite this, the judge handed down a custodial sentence for the tragic events that unfolded.

Ghetts, the celebrated British rapper, has been at the forefront of the UK music scene for years. With two Mercury Prize nominations, collaborations with big names like Skepta and Stormzy, and accolades at the MOBO Awards, he has solidified his place as a musical force to be reckoned with. His performances at Glastonbury Festival and appearance in the Netflix series Supacell further showcase his versatility and talent.

However, Ghetts’ career has been marred by a tragic incident that has left a family grieving and a young life cut short. In a fatal hit-and-run accident, Ghetts was found guilty of killing 20-year-old student Yubin Tamang. The court heard that Ghetts had been involved in multiple collisions and dangerous driving incidents leading up to the fatal crash, demonstrating a disregard for other road users and a blatant disregard for the law.

Despite his musical success and accolades, Ghetts now faces a 12-year jail sentence for his actions. The sentencing marks a troubling chapter in his otherwise celebrated career, leaving fans, collaborators, and industry insiders reeling from the tragic turn of events. The consequences of his reckless decision to drive under the influence have forever altered the lives of those involved, serving as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of dangerous driving.

At the heart of this tragedy is not fame or reputation, but a young student with a promising future who will never fulfill his potential. Yubin Tamang’s parents are left to grieve the loss of their son, while Ghetts must come to terms with the consequences of his actions. The public is reminded once again of the profound and lasting impact that reckless decisions behind the wheel can have on multiple lives.

As Ghetts begins his prison sentence, the music industry and fans alike are left to reflect on the tragic events that have unfolded. The sentencing serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of drink-driving and reckless behavior, emphasizing the importance of responsible driving and the devastating consequences that can result from irresponsible actions on the road. With the rise of social media and the internet, the way we consume news has drastically changed. Gone are the days of waiting for the morning newspaper or the evening news broadcast to get our updates on current events. Now, with just a few clicks, we can access news from around the world in real-time.

One of the biggest changes in news consumption has been the shift towards digital news outlets. Websites like CNN, BBC, and The New York Times have become go-to sources for many people looking to stay informed. These websites not only provide written articles but also videos, podcasts, and interactive graphics to help audiences better understand the news.

Social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook have also played a significant role in how we consume news. Many news organizations now have a strong presence on these platforms, sharing breaking news updates and engaging with their audiences in real-time. This has made it easier for people to stay informed on the go, whether they’re waiting in line at the grocery store or sitting on the subway.

Another major shift in news consumption has been the rise of personalized news feeds. Platforms like Google News and Apple News use algorithms to curate news stories based on a user’s interests and reading habits. This means that people are no longer limited to the news stories that a traditional newspaper or TV network decides to cover. Instead, they can access a wide range of news stories from different sources, tailored to their preferences.

However, this personalized news feed model has also raised concerns about the spread of misinformation. With algorithms determining what news stories people see, there is a risk that users may be fed biased or inaccurate information that reinforces their existing beliefs. This has led to calls for greater transparency and accountability from tech companies when it comes to curating news content.

Overall, the way we consume news has evolved significantly in recent years. While digital news outlets and social media platforms have made it easier than ever to access news, there are also challenges in ensuring that the information we receive is accurate and unbiased. As technology continues to advance, it will be important for both news organizations and tech companies to work together to address these challenges and ensure that the public can trust the news they consume.
