A father and his daughter from Texas are taking a stand after the high school student was suspended for defending herself against an assault that occurred during class.

In March, a viral cellphone video posted to X captured the confrontation between Brooklyn Gianfrancesco, a student at Taylor High School in Katy, Texas, and a male classmate.

The footage reveals the male student, who is black, throwing a punch at Brooklyn, who is white, while a teacher stood by, seemingly uninvolved. As the teacher hastily retreated, Brooklyn retaliated with her own defense.

The altercation escalated as the male student pinned her down, prompting another student to intervene. One observer on social media labeled the boy a “bully.”

In the aftermath of the incident, both students received a three-day suspension. Danny Gianfrancesco, Brooklyn’s father, has been vocal at school board meetings, arguing against what he sees as an unjust policy, according to KHOU.

“I attend your meetings because my daughter was assaulted on March 25 by a football player,” Gianfrancesco stated at a recent gathering. “He was beating her like his life depended on it.”

Gianfrancesco claims that the male student, a football player, had been harassing his daughter throughout the school year without consequence. Her boyfriend had previously told the athlete to stop bothering her.

Interestingly, the boy alleged that he was the one being harassed. School officials described the encounter as a “mutual confrontation” and imposed the same suspension on both students, apparently without reviewing the video evidence.

“Anyone who views this footage can see it’s not a mutual confrontation; it’s a boy assaulting a girl,” Gianfrancesco asserted. “The violence in this district has to stop, and we need to reform the discipline policy to protect students and teachers.”

Gianfrancesco believes the boy should face assault charges.

“I don’t want this to happen to anyone else’s daughter. That video is incredibly difficult to watch. I can’t even bear it anymore. When did we start accepting such blatant aggression? This is a clear case of a boy assaulting a girl,” he lamented, as reported by KTRK-TV.

The school district offered an explanation for its decision.

“The district is aware of an altercation between two students at Taylor High School on March 25. Katy ISD administration and local police conducted an immediate investigation to ascertain the facts of the incident and contacted the respective parents,” the district stated.

“Following the investigation by campus administrators and the Katy ISD Police, students whose behavior violates the Student Code of Conduct face disciplinary action in accordance with Katy ISD discipline policies, the Student Code of Conduct, and applicable law enforcement procedures.”

Sherry Ashorn, the district’s director of student affairs, clarified that self-defense does not exempt a student from punishment, as noted by the New York Post.

“If another student confronts you, you should refrain from retaliating,” Ashorn explained. “The policy stipulates that both students can face disciplinary action, regardless of who initiated the fight.”

Brooklyn Gianfrancesco, the assault victim, stated that the school has been uncooperative in her father’s attempts to access security footage that could substantiate the claim of assault, according to Katy News.

“What happened to me on March 25 would be classified as an assault anywhere else but in my school,” she asserted.
