Global nationalism? – Econlib

Nationalism has been on the rise globally, causing concern for many. However, there is a silver lining to this trend – nationalism often ends up undermining itself.

A perfect example of this can be seen in the current situation in North America. President Trump has made it clear that he prefers a Conservative government in Canada over the Liberal party, particularly disliking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Recently, Trump’s comments on Canada, including suggesting it become the 51st state and threatening 25% tariffs, have sparked controversy.

Interestingly, just before Trump’s criticism, the Conservative party in Canada had been enjoying a significant lead in the polls. However, in a matter of days, much of that lead disappeared. This sudden shift in public opinion is a testament to the impact of Trump’s rhetoric on Canadian politics.

It is important to note a couple of things. Firstly, there is still a substantial amount of time before the fall election, and the Conservatives may still emerge victorious. Secondly, unlike Trump, the Canadian Conservative leader is not an authoritarian nationalist, which has likely played a role in the party’s popularity.

The growing unpopularity of Trump in Canada has also strained relations with Britain’s nationalist right, further highlighting the divisive nature of nationalism. If the US continues to impose tariffs on its trading partners, it could lead to more international conflicts.

On a slightly different note, there has been a concerning trend of bigotry gaining traction on the right, partly in response to the rise of cancel culture. The recent resignation of Marko Elez, who made offensive remarks online, sheds light on this issue. Elez expressed that his controversial views were becoming “cool,” indicating a worrying shift in societal norms.

Vice President Vance, while disagreeing with Elez’s posts, believes that social media missteps should not ruin a young individual’s life. However, there is a valid concern about immature individuals holding positions of power in the government. Perhaps it is prudent to wait until they mature before entrusting them with important responsibilities.

In conclusion, the ebb and flow of nationalism and its consequences are evident in current events. While it may create temporary rifts and conflicts, it ultimately has the potential to sow seeds of discord that could have far-reaching implications. It is essential to remain vigilant and mindful of the impact of nationalist sentiments on society.
