GM Revives Chevrolet Bolt EV with Refreshed Model

Die-hard Chevrolet Bolt fans were thrilled to hear the news that General Motors was bringing a refreshed version of the EV subcompact back into production. The GM brand acknowledged the dedicated owners and supporters within the company for the car’s revival. However, the decision to bring back the Bolt was not solely based on fandom but on practical business considerations.

GM’s decision to revive the Bolt was influenced by various factors, starting with the surplus factory capacity at the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas. With the production of the Chevy Malibu ending a couple of years ago and the production of Chevy Equinox SUVs and Buick Envisions scheduled for the future, the plant had room for the Bolt to fill the gap.

Another crucial factor in the Bolt’s comeback was the increased availability of EV-specific parts, which helped reduce the costs of the new model. Rather than building on a new platform, GM focused on making incremental improvements to enhance the final product.

Recent test drives of the new Bolt have shown promising results, indicating that it could boost GM’s EV sales in a competitive market. The original 2017 Bolt marked GM’s first dedicated EV in two decades, requiring extensive design and collaboration efforts, especially with LG Energy Solution for the battery pack.

Today, GM offers a range of all-electric models across its brands, providing valuable experience and resources for engineering the new Bolt. The new model features advanced technology, such as the Android Automotive operating system and a more efficient motor borrowed from the Chevy Equinox.

GM expects the new Bolt to be profitable, addressing challenges faced by the previous model. Despite hurdles in the EV transition, GM remains committed to producing EVs and phasing out fossil fuel vehicles by 2035.

While some may view the new Bolt as a modest improvement, it represents a step towards sharing technology and making incremental advancements in the EV market. Small improvements in range and efficiency can lead to significant progress over time, without the need for extravagant investments in new platforms.
