Sonya Walger has been cast in the recurring role of Freya for the “God of War” live-action series on Amazon Prime Video, according to Variety.
Walger will join the adaptation of the popular video game series alongside Ryan Hurst, who plays Kratos, the god of war, and Callum Vinson, who portrays his young son, Atreus. The cast also includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as the brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.
Freya is described as a Vanir goddess and princess skilled in ancient magic. She is the ex-wife of Odin (Patinkin) and was once the Queen of the Valkyries in Asgard, a title she gained on her wedding day. Known for her strength and insight, Freya is also burdened by regrets. After her marriage to Odin ended in her exile, she was cut off from her family and homeland, Vanaheim. Freya has lived in isolation in Midgard for a century, feared by humans and known as the Witch of the Woods.
Walger is widely recognized for her role as Penny Widmore in ABC’s “Lost,” where she joined in the second season and continued through the series finale. She recently appeared in the Apple TV series “For All Mankind” as astronaut Molly Cobb. Her other credits include the Amazon series “Night Sky,” “The Catch,” and “Get Shorty.” Her novel, “Wifehouse,” is set to be released in April by Union Square Books.
She is represented by Gersh and Authentic Talent & Literary Management.
The “God of War” series will explore the narrative of the latest games, focusing on Kratos raising his ten-year-old son, Atreus, while confronting Norse gods. The plot follows their journey to scatter the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Throughout their quest, Kratos aims to teach Atreus to be a better god, while Atreus helps his father learn to be a better human.
