Google has officially ended support for Android 12, as reported by reliable sources. This means that it is high time to consider upgrading those old smartphones and tablets that are still running on this outdated operating system.

In the recently published Android Security Bulletin for April 2025, Android 12 and Android 12L are noticeably absent, indicating the end of support for these versions. According to sources from Android Authority, Google ceased providing security patches for Android 12 devices on March 31, following the release of the March 2025 Android Security Bulletin.

With the discontinuation of support, Android 12 devices are no longer receiving fixes for any new security vulnerabilities that may arise. Therefore, it is strongly recommended for users still on Android 12 to upgrade to a newer version for enhanced security.

Who still uses an Android 12 phone anyway?

Contrary to popular belief, a significant number of Android users are still utilizing devices running on Android 12 or earlier versions. Recent data from Google indicates that a majority of Android users have not yet upgraded to newer versions. Despite Android 12 being released in October 2021 alongside the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, which still appear modern, the operating system is only three and a half years old. Additionally, Android 12L, tailored for tablets and foldable devices, is only three years old.

What next for Android 12 users?

Google’s decision to end support for Android 12 after 3.5 years aligns with its standard practice. However, third-party manufacturers, like Huawei, may continue to provide security patches for Android 12-based systems, especially due to ongoing US sanctions. For other users still on Android 12 devices, it may be time to consider upgrading to newer models. If budget is a concern, there are affordable phone options available that offer good value for money.

In conclusion, the end of support for Android 12 serves as a reminder for users to stay updated with the latest operating systems to ensure optimal security and performance. It is essential to prioritize device security by upgrading to newer versions that receive regular security updates and patches.
