AI Photo Editing

  • Author: Sarah Perez

In a groundbreaking announcement, Google unveiled a new feature for Android users that allows them to edit photos using artificial intelligence. Users can interact with Google Photos through natural language, describing their desired edits via voice or text input.

This innovative feature aims to simplify photo editing, eliminating the need to navigate complex editing tools or interface layouts within the app.

The AI-driven capability, powered by Gemini, first became accessible to users of the recently launched Pixel 10 devices in the United States, which debuted in August.

To utilize this feature, simply tap on “Help me edit” in the photo editor, then articulate how you wish to modify the image. For those seeking inspiration on how to enhance their photos, suggestions generated by Gemini are available. You can even prompt the AI to “make it better.”

The AI editing capabilities cover a range of standard adjustments, including light enhancements and object removal, as well as more complex edits such as background modifications and restoring vintage images. Additionally, users can request creative transformations, incorporating imaginative elements within their photos.

As the editing process continues, Gemini is equipped to handle follow-up requests, facilitating further refinements to meet user expectations.

Currently, this AI editing tool is exclusively available in English for U.S. users aged 18 and older.

Alongside this new editing feature, Google also announced the integration of C2PA Content Credentials in Google Photos, which tracks and indicates when images have been generated or edited using AI technology. This functionality was initially launched with Pixel devices but is now extending to all Android users.
