Google Discontinues Support for First and Second Generation Nest Thermostats
In a recent announcement, Google revealed that starting on October 25, it will no longer provide support or software updates for the first and second generation Nest Learning Thermostats. Additionally, the tech giant will cease launching new Nest products in Europe.
Owners of Nest thermostats released in 2011 and 2012, as well as the European version from 2014, will no longer receive updates and their devices will no longer be supported in the Nest and Home apps. However, they will still be able to manually adjust temperature and schedules directly on their devices.
Google explained its decision by stating, “To fully invest in [future] advancements and bring you the most cutting-edge features on our latest generation of Nest thermostats, we will be transitioning away from supporting three of our oldest devices, each over a decade old.”
As for the decision to halt the launch of Nest thermostats in Europe, Google cited the unique heating systems in the region with diverse hardware and software requirements that pose challenges in product development. While existing Nest devices will still be available for purchase in Europe until supplies last.
