Speculation Surrounding Potential Derek Chauvin Pardon by President Trump Continues
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and other Democratic leaders are fueling rumors that President Trump may pardon Derek Chauvin, the former police officer convicted of killing George Floyd. Despite Trump’s previous claim of being unaware of any pardon efforts, sources from the Department of Justice have also denied knowledge of such a possibility.
Walz, who is speculated to be Kamala Harris’ potential running mate in 2024, commented on the online rumors, stating that while there has been no official signal from the Trump administration regarding clemency for Chauvin, it wouldn’t be surprising given the nature of the current presidency.
Minneapolis Community Safety Commissioner Toddrick Barnette emphasized the city’s readiness for any scenario, indicating that emergency management plans have been overhauled since 2020.
Even if Trump decides to pardon Chauvin, the convicted officer would not be released as he faces charges in both state and federal courts related to Floyd’s death. In the event of a pardon, Chauvin would be transferred from federal to state custody.
Unrest following Floyd’s death in 2020 led to widespread protests and property damage across the country. Chauvin, who pleaded guilty to federal charges in 2021, was also convicted of murder and manslaughter in state court.
Amidst calls from some Trump supporters for a pardon, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene voiced her support for Chauvin’s release from prison.
