A massive 9-foot, 8-inch white shark was recently spotted off the coast of Beaufort, North Carolina, marking a significant milestone in OCEARCH’s tracking efforts.

OCEARCH, a global non-profit organization focused on marine conservation through data collection, tagged this apex predator as the 100th white shark in their Global Shark Tracker back in July. The shark was named “Quint” in honor of Dr. Quinton White from Jacksonville University’s Marine Science Research Institute.

Quint was initially tagged in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, and has since been making his way south along the East Coast towards warmer waters. He was recently detected off the Carolina Coast on Nov. 14.

Chris Fisher, OCEARCH Founder and Expedition Leader, expressed his pride in reaching the milestone of tagging 100 white sharks in the Western North Atlantic, a goal that once seemed impossible.

Quint’s journey for warmer waters coincides with the reappearance of another massive male great white shark, Contender, in the Atlantic Ocean near New Jersey. Contender, weighing an impressive 1653 pounds and measuring 13 feet in length, is estimated to be around 32 years old.
