Dedicated mechanical ventilation systems can offer solutions. For instance, exhaust-only systems remove stale air but allow uncontrolled air entry through cracks. Supply-only systems bring in fresh air, which, without balanced removal, can cause pressure problems or cold drafts.

Balanced systems are considered the optimal choice. They introduce fresh air and expel stale air at equal rates, ensuring comfort, energy efficiency, and effective pollutant removal.

  • Choose low-VOC products: Look for “low-VOC” or “no added VOC” labels on paints, furniture, and other household products. You can also opt for natural alternatives.
  • Have an energy audit or ventilation assessment performed: Professional auditors can identify insufficient ventilation, high humidity, and contaminant buildup. Some utilities subsidize energy audits, offering low-cost or free assessments.
