Marquiese Smith (Chicago Police Department)

Prosecutors reported that an armed individual discharged a weapon during an attempted robbery on a Green Line train last week.

The incident involved a 26-year-old man from Ohio who was traveling south on the train near 47th Street. Around 1:15 a.m. on May 28, 19-year-old Marquise Smith approached him, according to prosecutors.

Smith allegedly threatened the victim by asking, ā€œDo you want to die?ā€ prompting the victim to move to the opposite end of the train car. Despite this, officials stated that Smith brandished a handgun and forced the victim from one end of the car to the other while attempting to steal his camera at gunpoint.

As the train was in motion, the victim managed to cross between cars, blocking Smith by shutting the door behind him and using his weight to keep it closed, prosecutors said. Allegedly, Smith, positioned between the two train cars, fired a shot into the air. The victim then quickly signaled for emergency assistance, alerting the train operator.

A CPD arrest report states that officers apprehended Smith at the 51st Street station and found a loaded .38-caliber revolver with a defaced serial number in his pants pocket.

Smith faces charges of attempted armed robbery, reckless discharge of a firearm, and aggravated possession of a firearm. Judge Rivanda Doss Beal has ordered him to remain in custody pending trial.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings.
Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets.
