The recent shooting in the Loop has left residents and authorities on high alert as they work to track down the gunman responsible for the attack. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening in the 1100 block of South State Street, where a 32-year-old man was walking when he was approached by another man who fired several shots, striking him twice in the back. The victim was quickly assisted by witnesses who flagged down a passing patrol car and he was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
According to police, surveillance footage captured the gunman emerging from the Roosevelt CTA station with a gun in hand just moments before the shooting took place. The video showed a Black man in his 20s wearing black pants and a red jacket with black zippers. There were conflicting reports about the gunman’s whereabouts after the attack, with some saying he returned to the train station and others claiming he fled in a waiting SUV.
This incident marks the eighth shooting in the Loop this year, a decrease from previous years but still a cause for concern. In comparison, there were 11 shootings by this time in 2024 and 14 in 2023. Despite the improvement, the number of shootings in the area is still higher than in 2019, when only four incidents were reported by this time of year. The impact of the pandemic is evident in the statistics, with 25 shootings in 2021 and 35 in 2022 by this time.
The authorities are working diligently to track down the gunman and bring him to justice. The safety and security of residents and visitors in the Loop are a top priority, and efforts are being made to ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future. The community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
