Harmeet Dhillon, head of the Civil Rights Division at the Trump Department of Justice, spoke on Newsmax about the agency’s initiatives to ensure that only American citizens are eligible to vote.
Dhillon emphasized that the DOJ is just one part of the broader effort, highlighting that various other agencies, including those at the state level, play a role in this process.
She noted that the approach of the DOJ Civil Rights Office shifted after the Trump administration took office in 2024, contrasting the previous administration’s stance where the office pursued legal actions against states and cities attempting to mandate voter ID.
Newsmax reports:
Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for civil rights, explained to Newsmax that the Department of Justice is diligently working to ensure compliance with the law that mandates only citizens can vote in federal elections.
During the “Ed Henry: The Big Take” segment, Dhillon stated that while the Trump administration is addressing this issue, it will be crucial for Congress to clearly address the loopholes being exploited by states.
She asserted the necessity of having only citizens vote in federal elections, stressing its importance.
“Recent developments from New Jersey and other jurisdictions, alongside DOJ prosecutions, including a new indictment, reveal that noncitizens are negating the votes of American citizens,” she observed.
Dhillon referred to the recent arrest of a Chinese national in Massachusetts, accused of fraudulent voter registration and casting a ballot in another Chinese national’s name during the 2024 presidential election.
“This is unacceptable, whether it’s one instance or a thousand,” she declared. “We are committed to addressing this issue during this administration.”
She criticized Minnesota’s vouching system, describing it as problematic and noting that the DOJ has been challenging it since January, marking her communication with the state’s secretary of state.

It’s remarkable that the Trump administration has to contend with Democratic Party members to ensure that only American citizens are allowed to vote.
This is a fundamental principle that should be universally accepted: only Americans should have the right to vote in American elections.
