Two Men Face Hate Crime Charges in Separate Incidents in Chicago

Chicago is reeling from two separate incidents of hate crimes that have shocked the community. In one incident, 20-year-old Andres Stathoulopoulos is facing charges for a racist knife attack in Portage Park. In another incident, 28-year-old Matthew King is accused of committing anti-Semitic vandalism near Goose Island.

Racist Knife Attack in Portage Park

Andres Stathoulopoulos has been charged with a hate crime following a disturbing incident on July 8 outside a home in the 5700 block of West Addison Street. The victims, a 42-year-old White woman and a 39-year-old Black man, were targeted by Stathoulopoulos who shouted racial slurs at them. Stathoulopoulos then proceeded to physically attack the woman with a knife, resulting in her receiving four stitches at a hospital. Surveillance video captured the attack, leading to Stathoulopoulos’ arrest in a suburb this week.

Anti-Semitic Vandalism near Goose Island

Matthew King is facing charges for carving anti-Semitic symbols and messages into the windows and signage of a business in the 800 block of North Elston Avenue on May 18. The business, which displayed an Israeli flag and a photo of a friend who was murdered in Gaza, was targeted by King who defaced the property with hateful messages. Surveillance footage helped identify King, who turned himself in after being linked to the crime through a phone number registered to his mother.

King has been charged with a hate crime and criminal damage to property. Despite the serious nature of the charges, prosecutors did not seek to detain him. Judge Ankur Srivastava released King from custody with orders to stay away from the business and its owner.

These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the presence of hate and intolerance in our society. It is imperative for communities to come together to condemn such actions and work towards building a more inclusive and accepting environment for all.
