Former India player Sanjay Bangar has raised concerns about the lack of finishing options for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as they head into the IPL 2026 season. Despite this, he believes that spin-bowling all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed could step up to play a crucial finisher’s role for the franchise, citing his fighting abilities on the field.
The Lucknow Super Giants had a disappointing campaign in IPL 2025, finishing seventh and failing to make it to the playoffs. Their batting lineup is top-heavy, featuring the likes of Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran, and Rishabh Pant.
During a recent discussion on Star Sports, Sanjay Bangar was asked about LSG’s finishing options for the upcoming season. He pointed out that apart from Shahbaz Ahmed, Abdul Samad, and Ayush Badoni, the team lacks players who can effectively finish games. Bangar emphasized the need for the top five batsmen to step up, with Shahbaz Ahmed expected to provide the finishing touches.
Describing Shahbaz Ahmed as a player with great character and fighting qualities, Bangar highlighted the importance of the top order performing consistently. He mentioned that if the top order fails to deliver, the team could face challenges throughout the season.
In IPL 2025, Shahbaz Ahmed only played three matches for LSG, scoring just nine runs in one innings. Meanwhile, Ayush Badoni scored 329 runs at a strike rate of 148.19 in 11 innings, and Abdul Samad managed 164 runs at a strike rate of 176.34 in 12 innings.
Bangar also commented on whether LSG have the most explosive top order in IPL 2026. He mentioned that the team comes close to having the most explosive batting lineup, similar to Sunrisers Hyderabad. With players like Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, and Nicholas Pooran in great form, Bangar believes that LSG have a strong top order that needs to perform consistently.
The former India batting coach also urged Rishabh Pant to bat higher up in the order, emphasizing that the team relies heavily on their top order for runs. Despite Pant’s relatively low aggregate of 269 runs in IPL 2025, he showcased his potential with a brilliant unbeaten 118 off 61 balls in the last league game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
In conclusion, Bangar highlighted the importance of the top order firing for LSG to have a successful season in IPL 2026. With the right balance of experienced players and promising talents like Shahbaz Ahmed, the team will look to make a strong impact in the upcoming season.
