A nurse known for his online health advice was fatally shot during an alleged robbery in downtown Oakland, leaving his family and thousands of followers mourning. Known as “Nurse Solomon,” Lartey Solomon, 33, was killed on May 31 near 14th and Harrison streets while heading to his car, according to authorities.
Prosecutors have accused Shacory Carnell Daniels, 39, from Vallejo, of murder in the shooting. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office stated that Daniels also faces charges of attempted robbery, intentional firearm discharge, and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Oakland police reported responding to gunfire around 2:45 a.m. in the 1400 block of Harrison Street. Upon arrival, they discovered a man with gunshot wounds. Solomon was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Solomon’s death drew widespread attention due to his role as a health educator on social media. Through TikTok, he shared medical information with over 20,000 followers.
An online fundraiser started by his brother, Emmanuel Solomon, revealed that Solomon was born in Ghana and later moved to the U.S. He attended Merritt College and earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Samuel Merritt University. The fundraiser noted that Solomon worked as a registered nurse at Alameda Health Care and Kindred Hospital in San Leandro.
“For him, nursing was more than a job—it was his calling,” his family shared. “He was dedicated to educating people about health and empowering them to make informed choices about their well-being.”
Relatives informed KTVU that Solomon and a friend were leaving a nightclub when a man demanded Solomon’s chain necklace. Solomon’s friend recalled hearing gunshots as he approached his car.
Daniels was arrested on June 4 in Menlo Park, as per prosecutors. He was arraigned Monday at Wiley Manuel Courthouse in Oakland and is held without bail. Court records show Daniels has prior felony convictions in Alameda, Contra Costa, and Orange counties. He is scheduled to enter a plea on June 30.
