Roblox Reports 45% of Daily Active Users Have Undergone Age Checks
Following the implementation of mandatory facial verification for chat access on its platform, Roblox has revealed that 45% of its daily active users have completed age checks as of January 31.
The decision to introduce age verification came in response to a series of lawsuits regarding child safety concerns, including actions from the attorneys general of Texas, Kentucky, and Louisiana. These legal challenges were prompted by reports indicating that Roblox was exposing young users to potential risks like grooming and explicit content.
To undergo the age verification process, users must open the Roblox app, grant access to their camera, and follow on-screen instructions for facial recognition. Once verification is complete, Roblox states that all user images and videos are promptly deleted. The verification process is managed by a third-party vendor, Persona, which also deletes any data after completion.
Upon successful age verification, users gain access to age-based chats, enabling communication only with others in the same age group. Six age categories exist: under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, and 21 and above. Users within each group can interact with those in adjacent age ranges. For example, individuals in the 9-12 category can chat with peers in their group, as well as those in the under 9 and 13-15 groups.
If a user believes the age check has inaccurately determined their age, they have the option to appeal the decision and verify their age through alternative methods, including ID verification or parental control updates.
During its recent Q4 2025 earnings release, Roblox disclosed that age-checked data revealed a younger user base than previously self-reported. Of the 45% of users who have completed age checks, 35% are under 13, 38% are aged 13 to 17, and 27% are over 18.
As the new process was rolled out, concerns were raised regarding potential loopholes. Wired reported instances of eBay listings for age-verified Roblox accounts of minors as young as nine years old. While eBay has since removed these listings, worries persist that predators could exploit the system to gain access by posing as minors.
Eliza Jacobs, Roblox’s senior director of product policy, assured that continuous age-check systems are in place to address these concerns and prevent abuse. The platform monitors account activity for inconsistencies and conducts keystroke analysis to ensure accurate age verification.
Roblox CEO David Baszucki shared during the earnings call that data collected through age checks will not only enhance platform safety but also drive revenue growth. The company has identified a significant growth opportunity among the 18-plus demographic, which monetizes 40% higher than younger cohorts.
Baszucki added that Roblox is optimizing its platform to cater to high-revenue genres favored by older users, such as shooters, RPGs, sports, and racing. The company remains committed to enhancing safety measures to address evolving risks and user needs.
