Superintendent Jason Guthrie, Southern District Commander, stated that the man was wanted for a series of offenses in the Otago Coastal Area. When officers located him at a commercial premises, the man drove his vehicle towards the patrol car in an attempt to evade arrest. Police then used tactical options, including firing a shot from a police pistol, no one was injured in the incident.
After fleeing the scene in a vehicle, the man was later apprehended by a police dog team in the Fraser’s Gully area. The public was advised to avoid Three Mile Hill and Brockville as officers conducted a search in the area. The cordons were expected to be lifted later that night.
Superintendent Guthrie assured the community that there was no ongoing public safety risk and commended the police staff for safely resolving the incident. A critical incident investigation has been initiated, and the matter will be referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) due to the discharge of a police firearm.
