Schumer Takes Aim at Trump Amid Polling Controversy
On Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer seized the opportunity to criticize former President Trump, leveraging what he deemed dubious polling data.
Media outlets have circulated claims suggesting Trump has recorded the lowest approval rating in his first 100 days since such metrics began being tracked 80 years ago. Reports cite a recent NPR/PBS News/Marist poll that indicates a stark disparity in public sentiment towards Trump’s performance.
According to the poll, “Twice as many people said President Trump deserves a grade of F rather than an A for how he’s handled his first 100 days in office,” as noted by NPR. Specifically, 45% of respondents assigned Trump a failing grade, while only 23% rated him positively. Surprisingly, even among independents, nearly half deemed his performance inadequate, and a mere majority of Republicans would award him an A.
Schumer, clearly relishing the moment, read these polling figures to reporters during a press conference, declaring, “The polls this week show Trump has the lowest 100-day approval rating since they started polling 80 years ago! The lowest!”
However, he was soon met with an unexpected counter from a reporter: “There’s a poll out today that has your approval rating lower than any other Congressional leader at 17%. Are you concerned that you may be a liability for your party?”
In response, Schumer deflected, asserting, “Polls come and go! Our party is united! We’re on our front foot, we’re stepping forward and going after Trump and having real success.” This statement could be interpreted as an attempt to bolster party morale amid internal challenges, but it does raise questions regarding the validity of his claims given the apparent polling trends.

CNN’s Harry Enten further complicated the narrative, asserting that regardless of the Democratic critique, Trump remains relatively stable in the polls. “No matter what polls claim about President Trump’s approval, he’s still far more popular than whatever Democrats are floundering around doing. Every sane American knows this,” Enten stated, suggesting a disconnect between public perception and political narratives.
