Matthew Simmonds is an artist who transforms humble blocks of Carrara marble and limestone into intricate miniature gothic cathedral structures. His sculptures depict realistic architectural details like arches, stairwells, and colonnades, inspired by real locations such as Tuscany and Bamberg Cathedral in Germany. Through meticulous carving, Simmonds captures the essence of these spaces, including vaulted ceilings, arcades, and staircases, sometimes allowing viewers to peek through additional openings for a closer look.

Recently, Simmonds has been focusing on commissioned work but has also found time to return to experimentation in his studio. He is exploring themes related to space and light in his sculptures, aiming to convey a sense of the sacred within the inner world of his creations.

One of his notable pieces, “Proscænium: Faxe,” crafted from limestone, exemplifies his attention to detail and mastery of carving techniques. This sculpture showcases a complex architectural design with intricate columns and arches, inviting viewers to marvel at the precision and artistry of the work.

Another striking piece, “Cities of Tuscany: Pisa,” carved from Carrara marble, stands tall at 37 centimeters, capturing the essence of Italian architecture with its delicate columns and arches. Simmonds’ ability to transform solid stone into delicate, ethereal structures is truly remarkable.

In “A Light in Dark Places,” a limestone sculpture measuring 42 centimeters in height, Simmonds explores the interplay of light and shadow within his miniature cathedral design. The intricate details of the carving create a sense of depth and mystery, drawing viewers into the sacred space he has created.

Through his work, Simmonds invites viewers to contemplate the beauty and complexity of architecture, offering a glimpse into a world of miniature wonders. His sculptures not only showcase his technical skill but also evoke a sense of reverence and awe for the architectural marvels they represent.
