During the official Christmas holiday period, the road toll remains at zero, a positive sign that safe driving practices are being adhered to. However, authorities emphasize the importance of continuing to prioritize road safety.

This year, the number of road fatalities has decreased to 268 from 292 last year, marking a positive trend. Superintendent Steve Greally, Director of road policing, acknowledges that every road death is a tragedy with far-reaching effects, but is encouraged by the decreasing numbers.

Greally highlights the importance of focusing on key areas such as wearing seatbelts or helmets, avoiding driving under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or fatigue, staying attentive and avoiding distractions, and adjusting speed according to road conditions.

Mark Owen, spokesperson for NZTA, recommends utilizing the Journey Planner webpage to access detailed information about planned routes and peak traffic times. By being aware of expected busy periods, travelers can better prepare for their journeys and potentially avoid congested roads.

Owen also stresses the significance of being well-rested before embarking on a long drive, taking regular breaks, and adjusting driving behavior based on weather conditions. With challenging weather forecasted for the North Island, drivers are urged to exercise caution and drive appropriately.

Ultimately, the goal is for everyone to safely return from their holiday destinations. By following these road safety tips and remaining vigilant, travelers can contribute to reducing road fatalities and ensuring a safe journey for all.
