The recent shooting spree in Santa Monica, allegedly carried out by a homeless man, has left residents on edge in Los Angeles. The suspect, David John Hairston II, 31, is now in custody and is likely to face charges of attempted murder for shooting a police officer and two teens in separate incidents.

Hairston was apprehended after a citywide manhunt following the shooting at a pedestrian mall. Prior to this, he had also allegedly shot two teenagers who were riding in a self-driving taxi. The wave of violence from transients in the city has raised concerns among the residents.

In addition to the Santa Monica incident, there have been other disturbing acts of violence by transients in the area. In Brentwood, a wealthy neighborhood, a gardener was attacked by a shirtless man wielding a pole. Security camera footage captured the random assault, adding to the fear among residents.

Meanwhile, in Beverly Grove, near Beverly Hills, an abandoned apartment building has been taken over by around 20 squatters. Residents have reported incidents of fires being started by one of the squatters, posing a serious threat to the neighborhood. Despite complaints to officials, the situation remains unresolved, leaving residents feeling helpless.

Governor Gavin Newsom has urged cities to take action against homeless encampments on public property to address the growing concerns of safety and security. The incidents in Santa Monica and other parts of Los Angeles highlight the urgent need for effective measures to address the issue of homelessness and its impact on public safety.
