Chicago Police Department is currently investigating a series of airbag thefts targeting Honda vehicles in the city. Since December, there have been multiple incidents involving thieves stealing airbags from Honda cars, with at least three separate groups believed to be involved in these crimes.

The Chicago Police Department has issued multiple community alerts to raise awareness about the issue, indicating the seriousness of the situation. The thefts have become a major concern due to the ease with which Honda airbags can be stolen and sold online, given the high demand for these parts.

One of the most active groups identified by detectives is a two-man crew that has been linked to numerous thefts. This crew is known to operate in a red Ford F-150 and a black GMC pickup truck with stolen plates. Recent reports indicate that they targeted multiple streets in Portage Park and Jefferson Park on the Northwest Side, as well as other areas such as the lakefront and Bucktown.

These thieves specifically target late-model Honda Civics, typically ranging from 2016 to 2021 models. Their method involves prowling the streets at night, breaking into Honda vehicles, and stealing the steering wheel airbags. While the police have provided some details about this particular crew, there are also other groups involved in similar thefts that have not been as extensively covered.

In response to the escalating airbag thefts, the Chicago Police Department is advising Honda owners to take precautions such as parking in well-lit areas or garages whenever possible. Additionally, they recommend using steering wheel locks as a deterrent to protect their vehicles from potential theft.

As the investigation continues, it is crucial for Honda owners to remain vigilant and take necessary steps to safeguard their vehicles from these organized theft groups. The prevalence of these crimes underscores the importance of community awareness and cooperation in combating such criminal activities.
