James Norman was at an ARCO gas station in Norco, California, tidying up his Chevy Trailblazer with the engine still running when 29-year-old Ryan Hewitt leaped into the driver’s seat and sped away. In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Norman, unable to escape in time, was dragged along and ultimately thrown from the vehicle. His family noted his frail condition, which may have contributed to his inability to react swiftly.
Ryan Hewitt has since been charged with felony carjacking and second-degree murder, with bail set at a staggering $1 million.
In the wake of this tragedy, Norman’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses and medical bills.

The family of James Norman, the 79-year-old man who suffered a brutal death during a carjacking, described their anguish as they were preparing to meet him for dinner before the incident unfolded.
His daughter recounted how her father, who had faced numerous life-threatening situations throughout his life, including a near-fatal fall and a plane crash, met his end in such a violent manner. âHe was just at the gas station cleaning his car, probably waiting for our call to say we were on our way,â said Nicole Lauritsen, Norman’s daughter.
Instead of a dinner invitation, Lauritsen received a call from a Riverside County sheriffâs deputy, informing her of her father’s accident. âI was in disbelief. Nothing made sense until I learned it was a carjacking,â she recalled, highlighting the surreal nature of the situation as it unfolded.
