The decision by House and Senate Democratic leadership to leave it up to each of their members to decide whether or not to attend Trump’s Tuesday night address before a joint session of Congress has sparked a wave of dissent among Democrats. Many are choosing to boycott the speech, while others plan to walk out or bring guests who will highlight the negative impact of Trump’s policies.
Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT), a vocal critic of the Trump administration, has labeled the State of the Union speech as a “farce” and a “MAGA pep rally.” He expressed his belief that Trump will use the platform to spread lies about his ties to Russia and his questionable dealings with billionaires like Elon Musk. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) has also announced her decision to skip the address, citing Trump’s disregard for the law and his destructive actions within federal agencies.
Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) has opted to hold a tele town hall with his constituents instead of attending the speech, while Representative Becca Balint (D-VT) has chosen to participate in a MoveOn livestream with Senate Democrats for real-time fact-checking. Representative Sean Casten (D-IL) is among those who will be skipping the speech altogether.
Some Democrats who do plan to attend the address are using it as an opportunity for protest. They intend to walk out during key moments or bring guests who have been negatively impacted by Trump’s policies, such as fired federal workers, Ukrainians, and individuals reliant on Medicaid. These actions are intended to send a message of resistance and disapproval towards the Trump administration.
It is clear that Democrats are determined to make their voices heard and stand up against the harmful policies of the Trump administration. Whether through boycotts, walkouts, or bringing attention to those affected by Trump’s actions, Democrats are finding creative ways to express their dissent. The ultimate goal is to show Trump that there is a strong opposition to his agenda and to hold him accountable for his actions.
