House Republicans are facing pressure to pass a bill to keep the government open, and the stakes are high. The looming threat of a government shutdown has put Speaker Mike Johnson’s leadership in jeopardy.

Tech mogul Elon Musk is leading the charge to stop the House from funding the government until Donald Trump takes office. Musk’s directive, if followed, would result in a government shutdown lasting more than a month, causing chaos and economic damage. His threat to primary any House Republican who votes for the bill has caused some Republicans to reconsider their support for the bill.

Fox News correspondent Chad Pergram reported that House Republicans are facing real-time attrition in yea votes for the bill, as Musk’s tweet has swayed some Republicans to vote no. Despite expectations of having the necessary votes within the next hour, the bill is losing support.

The uncertainty surrounding the bill may cost Speaker Mike Johnson his job. CNN’s Melania Zanona revealed that GOP Rep. Thomas Massie has announced he will not vote for Johnson for speaker in January, opting to vote “present” or for someone else. With Republicans holding a slim majority in the next Congress, losing even a few votes could spell trouble for Johnson’s leadership.

If Johnson loses enough support, he could be ousted as Speaker, plunging the House into deeper chaos and stalling Trump’s agenda. The inability of House Republicans to come together on this crucial issue may have far-reaching consequences, with Johnson’s job hanging in the balance.

In conclusion, the pressure to pass a bill to keep the government open has put House Republicans in a difficult position, and Speaker Mike Johnson’s leadership is at risk. The outcome of the upcoming vote series will have significant implications for the future direction of the House and the Trump administration’s agenda.
