Future Legislative Plans Discussed by House Speaker Mike Johnson
In a recent appearance on “Sunday Morning Futures,” House Speaker Mike Johnson engaged in a dialogue with host Maria Bartiromo, addressing the prospects of a significant legislative initiative in 2025.
Johnson described the “Big Beautiful Bill” as a pivotal milestone, stating, “America first is no longer merely an agenda; it is now enshrined in law. A significant portion of this investment focuses on border security and national defense.”
He elaborated on the nature of these investments, mentioning, “They encompass naval vessels and modern warfare capabilities. Additionally, our funding for the Golden Dome initiative is aimed at bolstering our national security.”
When Bartiromo inquired about the direction of the legislative agenda and the possibility of a second reconciliation package later this year, Johnson affirmed, “Yes, we are executing a strategic plan that we devised over a year ago. Approximately 15 months back, we anticipated winning a unified government.”
“We cannot afford to squander this historic opportunity, especially with President Trump potentially returning to the White House. It is our duty to rectify the public policy metrics that were compromised under Biden, Harris, and the Democrats over the last four years,” he added.
Johnson emphasized the urgency of passing at least two reconciliation bills before spring to facilitate the passage without Democratic support. “We have multiple steps ahead of us and a comprehensive strategy for at least two, potentially three reconciliation bills: one this fall and another next spring, allowing us to proceed on a partisan basis with only Republican votes,” he explained.
Bartiromo then raised concerns regarding the perceived lack of codification of President Trump’s executive orders. “Some critics have pointed out that not enough of these orders have been formalized in Congress. Where do you see the need for this?” she asked.
Johnson responded, “We have successfully incorporated nearly 30 of these orders into the ‘Big Beautiful Bill,’ effectively making them law. They are now codified and permanent. Additionally, we have already codified around 15 to 20 more executive orders in the House. Our goal was to integrate as many as possible into the reconciliation package, as we were confident they would be signed into law.”
He concluded by praising President Trump’s effectiveness, stating, “I believe he has been one of the most accomplished presidents in the first six months of his term compared to any previous president.”
