Amazon Web Services (AWS), a division of Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), announced on Wednesday its partnership with German software giant SAP SE ADS (NYSE:SAP) to deliver SAP Sovereign Cloud services on AWS’s upcoming European Sovereign Cloud, which is backed by an investment of 7.8 billion euros (approximately $9.16 billion) from Amazon.

For over 16 years, AWS and SAP have partnered to expand their collaborative efforts aimed at supporting European customers in fulfilling their digital sovereignty requirements, while simultaneously driving innovation in AI and accelerating the pace of digital transformation.

The SAP Sovereign Cloud is designed to deliver security-enhanced solutions conforming to the highest industry standards, particularly for government and regulated sectors.

This initiative aims to merge SAP’s enterprise expertise with AWS’s robust infrastructure and operations to meet the surging digital sovereignty demands present across Europe.

David Brown, Vice President of Compute and Machine Learning at AWS, remarked, “We’re excited that SAP Sovereign Cloud will be made available through the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. This venture will provide organizations with enhanced options to meet their sovereignty requirements while making use of top-tier cloud technologies.”

AWS intends to launch its first European Sovereign Cloud region in Brandenburg, Germany, by late 2025, with the goal of equipping public sector organizations and regulated industries with increased flexibility regarding data residency, autonomy, and resiliency.

Since the SAP Sovereign Cloud is currently operational on AWS in multiple markets, including Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada, and India, its introduction in Europe represents a significant development in providing secure and sovereignty-focused cloud alternatives for regional customers.

This service is crafted to assist organizations in innovating securely while adhering to local regulatory mandates and scaling to accommodate their evolving needs.

The introduction of SAP Sovereign Cloud on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud will feature offerings such as SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) and SAP Cloud ERP, facilitating secure innovation, regulatory compliance, and scalable operations.

Importantly, the AWS European Sovereign Cloud is designed to function independently from existing AWS regions, without relying on any non-EU infrastructure.

Price Action: Shares of AMZN were observed trading up by 0.69% to $222.23 at the latest update on Wednesday.
