The Impact of ChatGPT and AI Assistants on Student Brain Functioning

In a recent study conducted by MIT and published in June of 2025, researchers revealed significant differences in the brain functioning of individuals using ChatGPT, search engines, and relying solely on their own creative skills to write essays. The findings indicated that ChatGPT users exhibited lower brain activity levels and performed poorly across neural, linguistic, and behavioral metrics over a four-month period. The report from Media.MIT.edu highlighted reduced neural connectivity and memory recall as notable variables.

While the study’s results have not undergone peer review and were based on a small sample size, they raise significant concerns about the impact of AI assistants on cognitive processes. A recent article by Time.com emphasized the potential negative effects of AI assistant reliance on learning processes and long-term brain development, especially among young students. It is crucial for counseling centers to evaluate the influence of ChatGPT and AI assistants on students’ mental health, particularly in areas such as motivation, resiliency, and relationships.

The Influence of ChatGPT and AI Assistants on Motivation

The MIT study revealed that ChatGPT users exhibited decreasing motivation with each subsequent essay, resorting to copying and pasting content and struggling to take ownership of their work. This decline in motivation and academic engagement can have detrimental effects on students’ overall well-being. Motivation plays a vital role in academic success and mental health, as highlighted in a study by Columbia University, which linked boredom to risky behaviors, anxiety, and depression.

Research published in the journal of Behavioral Sciences demonstrated that motivated students exhibit more interest in their studies and have higher academic performance. While some studies suggest that AI assistants like ChatGPT can enhance productivity and freedom for students, it is essential to consider their potential impact on motivation levels. Counselors should be attuned to signs of low motivation among students and explore how AI assistants may be contributing to this issue.

The Impact of ChatGPT and AI Assistants on Resiliency

Participants in the MIT study displayed limited memory retention and decreased engagement in alpha and beta brain wave networks when asked to rewrite essays without ChatGPT. Brain waves play a crucial role in mental health, with alpha waves associated with relaxation and beta waves essential for problem-solving. Excessive reliance on AI assistants may lead to heightened stress levels and reduced creativity when facing academic challenges.

Mental health professionals should assess students’ resiliency levels and evaluate the role of AI assistants in coping with academic stressors. While AI assistants can provide quick access to information, they may also hinder students’ ability to develop problem-solving skills and resilience. The American Psychological Association has suggested that AI tools like ChatGPT can promote critical thinking skills, but their impact on students’ resiliency requires further examination.

The Role of ChatGPT and AI Assistants in Relationships

Social support is a critical aspect of college mental health, with high levels of social support serving as a protective factor against psychological distress and other mental health issues. Studies have shown that excessive use of AI chatbots can lead to greater loneliness, dependence, and reduced socialization among students.

While AI assistants can offer emotional support and companionship, concerns have been raised about the content and quality of interactions with these chatbots. It is essential for counseling centers to evaluate the impact of AI use on students’ social connections and emotional well-being. AI chatbots have the potential to extend therapy services when appropriately designed and supervised by qualified professionals.

As AI assistants become more prevalent in educational settings, it is imperative for counseling centers to assess both the positive and negative effects of AI technology on students’ mental health. By understanding the potential implications of AI assistants on motivation, resiliency, and relationships, counselors can better support students in navigating the challenges of academic life.
