Title: Judy Baca Faces Allegations of Misusing Mellon Foundation Grant for Personal Benefit

Activist and painter Judy Baca, renowned for her iconic half-mile-long mural “The Great Wall of Los Angeles” (1983), is currently under scrutiny for allegedly misusing funds from a Mellon Foundation grant awarded to her nonprofit organization. The accusations, made by 10 former employees of the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC), claim that Baca diverted a $5 million grant intended for the expansion of the mural for personal gain. Baca, however, vehemently denies these allegations.

According to a recent report by the Los Angeles Times, employees whose salaries were partially funded by the grant stated that Baca requested them to perform personal tasks for her, rather than utilizing the funds for the intended purpose of mural expansion. The report also highlighted a significant increase in Baca’s salary following the grant award, raising concerns about the allocation of funds.

Baca, along with SPARC Board Chair Zojeila Flores, refuted all allegations of misusing the grant money in an interview with the LA Times. Baca attributed the accusations to disgruntled former employees and expressed her hope that SPARC could continue the mural project without further controversy.

The mural, initiated by Baca in 1974 as a tribute to California’s diverse history, has been a symbol of unity and community engagement. Over the years, Baca has worked tirelessly to preserve and expand the mural, involving hundreds of local residents in the process. The recent accusations have cast a shadow over the project’s integrity, raising questions about the transparency of fund utilization.

Despite the denials from Baca and SPARC, concerns about the misuse of the Mellon Foundation grant persist. Former employees, including Pete Galindo and Carmen Garcia, have come forward with claims of inappropriate use of funds and personal benefit by Baca. The allegations have sparked a public debate about accountability and ethical practices in the art community.

As the controversy unfolds, the Mellon Foundation has yet to respond to inquiries about the grant’s disbursement. The future of the mural project and SPARC’s reputation hangs in the balance as investigations into the allegations continue. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
